Danville - Dorothy R. Markel, 89, formerly of Kulpmont, died Sunday, August 27, 2017 at Grandview Health Homes.

Born in Mount Carmel on May 25, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Bertin C. and Mildred M. (Fisher) Fegley.

She was a lifelong resident of Kulpmont and was employed at Maue Mills in Shamokin & Elysburg.

On December 28, 1946 in All Saints Lutheran Church, Kulpmont, she married the late J. Allen Markel, who preceded her in death on March 4, 2000.

Dorothy was educated in Kulpmont Elementary School and was a 1946 graduate of Roosevelt High School in Kulpmont.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Kulpmont and was active in several churches her whole life. In her earlier years, Mrs. Markel served as organist for several area churches, most recently the United Methodist Church of Kulpmont.

Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy R. Michaels and her husband John of Lewisburg; Carol A. Johnson and her husband Larry E. of Catawissa and Janice J. Melnick and her husband Robert of Lincoln University, PA; seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Anna Markel of Middleburg and Barbara Weikel of Sunbury. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Irene Fegley who died at 18 months old.
