Mount Carmel – Eugenia "Jean" (Kundis) Mathias, 91, of 401 N. Maple St., passed away on March 24, 2023 at Geisinger Shamokin Area Community Hospital.

She was born in Natalie on February 27, 1932, the daughter of the late Peter and Eva (Waryan) Kundis.

Jean was a graduate of Mount Carmel Township High School, class of 1947. She was a lifelong resident of the Mount Carmel area. She worked as a roller at the Mount Carmel Cigar Factory, a bookkeeper in Brooklyn, NY, and later as a housewife.

On July 31, 1954, in St. Joseph's Church, Mount Carmel, she married Anthony Mathias, who preceded her in death in 1979.

Jean was a member of St. Michael's Orthodox Church in Mount Carmel, where she sang soprano in the parish church choir. She was a member of FROC and WOC.

Jean is survived by her son, Christopher Mathias of Mt. Carmel; daughter, Pamela Sweny and husband, Timothy of Holland, MA; brother, Phillip Kundis of Mt. Carmel; four grandchildren, Jonathan Sapaugh and his partner, Marie of Mansfield CT, Alyson Sapaugh of Palmer, MA, Tyler Sapaugh of Mill Valley, CA and Travis Sweny of Webster MA; four great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents and husband, Jean was preceded in death by four brothers, Peter Kundis, Harrold Kendon, Paul Kundis, and Walter Kundis; a sister, Lydia Kundis; and grandson, Wil Sweny.

Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 30, 2023 at 10 a.m. with Father Vjekoslav Jovicic as celebrant in St. Michael's Orthodox Church, 131 N. Willow St., Mt. Carmel. Burial will follow in St. Michael's Orthodox Cemetery, Mt. Carmel Twp. Viewing will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. with Panikhida at 6:30 p.m. and Thursday, March 30, 2023 from 8:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. in the C. J. Lucas Funeral Home Inc., 27 N. Vine Street, Mt. Carmel, PA, C. J. Lucas IV, Supervisor. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mount Carmel Public Library, 30 S. Oak Street, Mt. Carmel, PA 17851.
