Mount Carmel – Henry R. Rakus, 94, of 209 N. Peach Street, passed away Monday, November 22, 2021 at Mountain View Manor in Coal Township.

He was born in Mount Carmel on August 6, 1927, the son of the late Jan and Stefania (Lapinski) Rakus.

He proudly served his country as a sailor in the United States Navy, serving on the battleship Iowa for three years during the occupation of Japan. Afterwards, Henry lived in Philadelphia for 20 years, serving as President and General Manager of the Quaker City Motor Parts Company.  Subsequent to that, he opened and operated Schuylkill County Auto Parts in Ashland, PA, until retiring at the age of 75.

Henry was a 1945 graduate of Mount Carmel High School. On May 8, 1948 he married Rose Lostyn in Our Mother of Consolation Church. Together they shared 67 years of marriage.

Henry was a member of the former Our Mother of Consolation Church, now known as Divine Redeemer Church, where he served as an usher for many years.  He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and American Legion, both in Mount Carmel.

Henry is survived by his son, Anthony and daughter-in-law Donna Rakus of San Antonio, TX; two grandsons, Justin Rakus and Brian Rakus, also both of San Antonio; a great-granddaughter, Savannah Rose Rakus; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and his wife Rose, Henry was preceded in death by four brothers: John, Matthew (Metz), Clement and Chester Rakus; three sisters: Mary Schlacta, Gail Santer, and Edna "Hedwig" LaPenta; two step-brothers, Michael "Mickey" Mitchell and Stanley Mitchell; three step-sisters, Helen Rakus, Ann Pascal, and Jennie Mitchell; and his exceptionally talented grandson Jeffrey Alan Rakus, who passed away in 2006 at the tender age of 19.

Henry R. Rakus, 94, of 209 N. Peach Street, Mt. Carmel – A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at 11:00 AM in Divine Redeemer Church, 300 W. Ave., Mt. Carmel with Father Ryan Fischer officiating. Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery, Elysburg. Viewing will be held prior to the Mass from
