Mount Carmel - Joan Pekera Shields, 79, of 315 South Hickory Street, passed away at Grandview Health Home on July 31, 2017.

Born in Marion Heights on May 10, 1938, she was the daughter of Peter and Mildred (Brown) Pekera. Joanie worked for Tastykake and Paper Magic.

Joanie was very outgoing, friendly, and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She loved her dogs: Peaches, Kingey, and Princey. She also had a joy for the  Christmas season.

She is survived by her sister-in-law Anna Pekera of Mount Carmel; five nieces, Denise Eye and her husband Rick of Girardville, Cathy McFadden and her husband James of Mount Carmel, Deborah Palmer and her husband Thomas of Northumberland, Lisa Horvath and her husband Jeffrey of Kulpmont, and Deborah Houseknecht of Muncy; three nephews, John Pekera and his wife Renay of Ringtown, James Pekera and his wife Laura of Lavelle, and Pete Pekera of Mount Carmel; niece-in-law Sheila Zanella; and several cousins. In addition to her parents Joan was predeceased by three brothers Kenneth Pekera and his wife Lois, Robert Pekera, and Thomas Pekera, infant; a sister Catherine Zanella and her husband Joseph; and a nephew Joseph Zanella.

FUNERAL NOTICE

Joan Shields, 79, of 315 South Hickory Street, Mount Carmel - Memorial Service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.  Burial will also be held at a later date in the Mount Carmel Cemetery, Mount Carmel Township.  Arrangements are being cared for by C. J. Lucas Funeral Home Inc., 27 North Vine Street, Mount Carmel, C. J. Lucas IV, Supervisor.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to C. J. Lucas Funeral Home, Inc., 27 North Vine Street, Mount Carmel, PA 17851, to defray funeral expenses.
