Kulpmont – John "Jack" Howanec, 87, passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2020 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

He was born on August, 4, 1933 the son of the late Cyril and Anna (Goretski) Howanec.

Jack was a graduate of Kulpmont High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army. After he left the service he worked as a coal miner for the Ramph Coal Company and then as a cutter at Len-Jeff Inc. until his retirement.

He was a member of the Patronage of the Mother of God Ukrainian Catholic Church in Marion Heights, the American Legion, VFW, West End Fire Company, Brady Fire Co., and Marion Heights Fire Co.

Jack was an exceptionally talented artist, wood carver and musician and long time member of the Kulpmont Boys Band. He loved to golf, hunt and fish and was happiest at the cabin in Slate Run or with his nieces and nephews at the Brady Fire Company. He was always at the center of the festivities and was the life of every party.  He made pierogis with the ladies in the Heights on the first Thursday of every month and was a mainstay of the "Kolach Nickies" (St. Nick and the Three Kings) when they caroled throughout the Marion Heights and Kulpmont area during the Christmas season. The world will be a quieter and sadder place without Jack.

Jack is survived by two sisters-in-law, Antoinette Howanec of Kulpmont, with whom he resided, and Irene Howanec of Chicago; eight nephews, Gary Howanec and wife, Jean of Lewisburg, Paul Bartko and wife, Judy of Mt. Carmel, Greg Wisloski and wife, Donna of Shamokin, Steven Wisloski and Kathy Koharski of Irish Valley, Myron Howanec and wife, Laurie of Corona, CA, Dave Howanec and wife, Nannie of Aurora, CO, Michael Bartko and wife, Dorothy of Northumberland, and Joe Howanec of New London, CONN; two nieces, Pauline Gredzinski of Brady and Donna Novak and husband, John, Chicago IL. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by three sisters, Pauline Howanec, Mary Wisloski and husband, Sam, and Martha Bartko and husband, Paul; four brothers, Paul Howanec, Joseph Howanec, Nicholas Howanec and Myron Howanec; nieces Kathy Wisloski and Loretta Tefft; and nephews George Gredzinski and Paul Howanec.
