Mount Carmel - Joseph Peter Swatski passed away peacefully with family at his side at the Mount Carmel Nursing Rehab Center on May 24, 2023.

Born in Ashland State Hospital on April 2, 1937 to Joseph and Helen Wydra Swatski, Swatski was a lifelong resident of Mount Carmel. He married Lucille A. Pulaski on Jan 4, 1958; the couple enjoyed 64 years together.

Swatski was a graduate of Mother of Consolation (MOC) parish school, Mount Carmel, 1950 and Mt. Carmel Catholic High School, 1954. He received a BS in Education with a concentration in math and science from Bloomsburg State College, Dec 1959. In 1963, he completed a Masters in Education from Temple University. Swatski continued graduate work in the natural sciences at Bucknell University and Allegheny College.

As an educator, Swatski taught math and science at Pennbrook Junior High School, North Penn School District, math at Milton Junior High School, Milton area school district, and math and science at Mount Carmel Junior and Senior high schools. Swatski served as principal at Owen J. Roberts High School, Owen J. Roberts School District, principal of Shamokin High School, and superintendent of the Shamokin area school district. He retired after 34 years of service.

Swatski's civil service included years with the Mount Carmel Municipal Authority, notably acting as Authority secretary during the new plant construction. He was president of the Mount Carmel Borough Council during the local swimming pool construction and acted as borough auditor. He also served on the Deppen Day and Relay for Life committees

Swatski was a 4th degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, assembly 959, a lifetime member, and the KOC's faithful purser for 37 years. He was also a member of the Mount Carmel Elks bowling league.

For Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish, Swatski had several roles: lector, eucharistic minister, and altar server for funerals. He was an active member in the St. Vincent de Paul Society, serving as secretary and treasurer, as well as being president of the St. Vincent de Paul conference.

Joseph P. Swatski is survived by 5 children, 13 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Helen Swatski, his wife Lucille, sister Sylvia, and grandson Noah.

Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Francis Karwacki officiating in the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 47 S. Market Street, Mt. Carmel. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Mt. Carmel Twp. There will be no public viewing on Tuesday morning, anyone wishing to attend the Funeral Mass will be ask to meet at the Church at 10:45 a.m. A viewing for the public will be held on Monday, May 29, 2023 from 6 p.m. until the Rosary starting at 8 p.m. in the C. J. Lucas Funeral Home Inc., 27 N. Vine St., Mt. Carmel, PA 17851, C. J. Lucas IV, Supervisor. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 47 S.
