Kulpmont – Joseph Henry Whalen, 83, of Roosevelt Court, passed away suddenly on July 13, 2026, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

He was born at Geisinger Hospital in Danville on December 24, 1942, the son of James F. and Rita M. (Rhoades) Whalen.

Joseph was a graduate of Mount Carmel Catholic High School, Class of 1960. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1964 to 1966 as a Chaplain's Assistant.

Following his military service, Joseph lived in Philadelphia, where he worked in the import and export department at Sears, Roebuck and Co. for 27 years. He later returned to Kulpmont and joined the family business, working alongside the Foris family at Rhoades Flower Shop.

Joseph was a devoted member of Church of the Holy Angels in Kulpmont. He was also a member of the Kulpmont American Legion and the Mount Carmel Senior Action Center. In his free time, Joseph enjoyed playing bingo, the lottery, as well as board games and card games, especially pinochle and canasta. He also loved watching Hallmark Christmas movies and classic Westerns.

Joseph is survived by a son, Sean Whalen of Collegeville; and two daughters, Mary Gennett and significant other, David Stevens of Philadelphia and Kathleen Coulter and husband, Douglas of Hamilton, VA; five grandchildren, Nicholas, Joseph, Lee Ann, Shane, Paige; two sisters, Joyce (Charles) Buchinski of Eagleville and Rita (Walter) Karczewski of Den Mar Gardens; and a sister-in-law, Mary Whalen of West Chester. In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by his two brothers, Francis Whalen and James Whalen; and a sister-in-law, Ellen Whalen.

Graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at 11 a.m. with Father Andrew Stahmer officiating in St. Edward's Cemetery, Coal Township.
