Mt. Carmel – Mary Ann D. (Hayes) Bednar, 73, of 304 Turnpike St., passed away Thursday, February 4, 2021, at Mt. Carmel Senior Living Community.

She was born in Betsy Layne, Kentucky on November 24, 1947, the daughter of the late Ernest and Dorothy (Vrabel) Hayes.

Mary Ann was a graduate of Mount Carmel High School. She worked as a seamstress for a local garment manufacturer, was a gardener for Knoebel's Amusement Resort, and later worked as a home health care aide.

She married Leonard V. Bednar in Shamokin, on December 16, 1972. Together they shared 48 years of marriage.

Mary Ann was a member of Divine Redeemer Church. She was devoted to her family often working countless hours making dozens of her homemade perogies and canning peaches and pears for the winter. She spent many evenings at the kitchen table helping her daughter with homework, playing board games, and doing puzzles together. She loved all the holidays, but Christmas was her favorite. She enjoyed the tradition of decorating the Christmas tree, shopping in the crowded malls, and especially attending Christmas Eve Mass. After her retirement, Mary Ann cherished her time spent in the backyard caring for her flowers and birdwatching while her Pomeranian Bambi kept the bunnies at bay.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard Bednar of Mt. Carmel; daughter, Christian Ierley and her husband Shawn and their son Brighton of Wellsville; a brother, William Hayes and wife, Joanne of Kulpmont; three sisters-in-law, Sally Bednar of Barnesville, Maureen Doyle and husband, Tony of New York, and Patricia Bednar of Coal Township.

Mary Ann D. (Hayes) Bednar, 73, of 304 Turnpike St., Mt. Carmel – Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at Divine Redeemer Church, 300 West Ave., Mt. Carmel, with Father Ryan Fischer officiating. Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery, Elysburg. Viewing will be held prior to the service from 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. at C. J.
