Long Beach , CA - Stella K. Blackwell, 90, a former Mt. Carmel resident, passed away on Monday, January 29, 2018 at Community Hospital of Long Beach, Long Beach.

She was born in Mount Carmel on November 25, 1927, a daughter of the late Anthony and Francis (Kowaleski) Zukowski.

She was a 1945 graduate of Mt. Carmel High School and a 1948 graduate of St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Reading, PA. Stella became a licenses registered nurse, and worked as a surgical nurse as well as a nursing director.  She was employed at Trenton General Hospital, St. Francis Hospital and Trenton State Prison; all located in Trenton NJ.  Her last employment was at Mt. Carmel Nursing Home, where she was the head nurse and assisting in staffing and opening the nursing home.

On July 3, 1951 she married the late Edgar John Blackwell in Trenton, NJ.  He preceded her in death in 1981.

Her hobbies included bowling, bingo, shopping, and visiting the local casinos. She loved her dogs and was a caretaker for Duke, Tippy and Pierre.

Prior to moving to California, she resided in Mt. Carmel, PA, Port Richey, FL and Hamilton Square, NJ.

She was a member of St. Hedwig Catholic Church, Los Alamitos, CA as well as a member of Divine Redeemer Church, and formerly a member of Our Mother of Consolation Church,  She was also a member of the Council of Catholic Women and the Altar Rosary Society.

She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Clara Zukowski of Aston, PA and Cecilia Zukowski, of Trenton, NJ; one brother-in-law Stephen Kent formerly of Atlas PA and currently in San Marcos, CA, nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two brothers, Chester and John Zukowski and two sisters, Pearl Zema and Mildred F. Kent.

Stella K. Blackwell, 90, formerly of Mount Carmel - Funeral Mass will be held Friday, February 9, 2018 at 11:00 am in Divine Redeemer Church, 300 West Avenue, Mount Carmel with Father Martin O. Moran III, officiating.  Burial will be in Our Mother of Consolation Cemetery, Mount Carmel Twp.  Viewing will be held Friday morning from 9:30 - 10:45 with transferal prayers at 10:00 in the C.J. Lucas Funeral Home, Inc., 27 North Vine Street, Mount Carmel, C.J.
