The Reverend, Mr. Richard Augustus Hazzard Sr., 91, of 132 Second St., Mount Carmel, passed away on August 28, 2023, at his residence with family by his side.

He was born in Lewes, DE, on April 27, 1932, the son of the late Augustus Nichols and Phyllis (Meadowcroft) Hazzard. Richard resided in the Mount Carmel area for 33 years and previously resided in Lewes Beach, DE and Linwood, PA.

Richard was a graduate of Upper Darby High School and attended Temple University and the Diocesan School for Christian Studies of the Episcopal Church. On June 22, 1950, he entered the Airforce during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged on February 26, 1953. Richard worked and retired from Bell Telephone.

On March 17, 1958, he married the former Caroline M. Fesniak in Elkton, MD. Together they shared 65 years of marriage.

Richard served as a Deacon at St. Stephen's Church and Holy Trinity Church for many years. On September 27, 2015, he was ordained to the Priesthood and served at the Church of Saint Philip and Saint James. He was a member of the Mount Carmel Ministerium and the Cedar Masonic Lodge. He also served as the Chaplain for the Strong Fire Company and was a former Chaplain for Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Richard is survived by his wife, Caroline M. Hazzard of Mt. Carmel; six children, Victoria Ann Hazzard Harris, Lydia Hazzard Walter, Richard A. Hazzard Jr., Phillip G. Hazzard, Constance H. Gomes, and William O. Hazzard; two sisters, Judy H. Finnigan and Carol H. Bradley; a brother, Stephen Hazzard; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by a sister, Joan H. Shellem; and a grandson, Nicholas Dipietro.

Funeral Service will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2023, with Bishop John Ganes officiating in the Mount Carmel Cemetery Chapel, 2320 Locust Gap Highway, Mount Carmel Twp, PA. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Viewing will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2023, from 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. in the C. J. Lucas Funeral Home Inc., 27 N. Vine St., Mt. Carmel, PA, C. J.
